  Top News:  
At the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, from October 30th-November 2nd Conococheague FFA members from James Buchanan High School Excelled in four different competitions. Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management is one of 25 national CDEs, covering job skills in everything from communications to mechanics. Members put the skills learned in their high school agricultural education classes to use in a practical manner. Participants evaluate multiple classes of dairy cattle and present oral reasons for their selections. Teams work together to develop a comprehesive management plan for a farm described in a given scenario. The team of Grant Heckman, Nathan Heckman, Hannah Horst, and Stuart Ocker received a silver medal. Individually, Hannah received a gold medal, while Stuart received a silver medal. Matthew Brake, Sarah Gress, Candice Plessinger, and Kolbey Stewart collaborated as a team to develop a pre-call plan for a variety of different customer types. Individual team members then utilize their skills in information gathering to sell a pre-selected product to one of the customer types. They also had their knowledge of sales principles tested in the written exam. As a team they received a silver medal. Individually, Sarah received a gold medal, while Matthew, Candice, and Kolbey received silver medals. Mikayla Barnhart, Michaela Suder, and Austin Wingert were challenged in all areas of the agricultural communications field. They attended a press conference, utilized information gathered in a team activity and completed individual practicums in design, electronic media and writing. They were also tested on editing and other communications skills. All three team members received silver medals as individuals and the team received a bronze medal. Finally, in the Agriscience fair competition, Paige Plessinger received a silver medal for her project exploring the effectiveness of generating methane from manure.
